Synesthesia - Documentary

Overall

I filmed and edited a documentary exploring synesthesia through the work of mixed media artist Ramona Armitage, whose practice is inspired by music and the visual responses she experiences through the condition.

Brief

Create a documentary piece that offers insight into Ramona Armitage’s creative world, using film to explore the connection between sound, colour and artistic expression. The project centred on her work as a Wimbledon-based mixed media artist, with a focus on how synesthesia informs both her process and the pieces she creates.

Execution

I approached the film in a reflective and visually led way, combining intimate cinematography with a considered edit to translate Ramona’s experience into something cinematic and engaging. The aim was to create a documentary that felt both personal and immersive, allowing the audience to better understand the relationship between music, perception and her artwork. This approach was shaped by the core themes presented through her practice and artist profile.

Outcome

The final documentary was designed to act as both an artist profile and a deeper exploration of synesthesia, helping communicate the meaning behind Ramona’s work in a way that felt accessible, thoughtful and visually rich. It created a piece that could support her wider portfolio and introduce new audiences to the story behind the art.
